The diameter (DIA) is the size of the contact lens from edge to edge, given in millimetres. Soft lenses are larger than the cornea and usually measure between 13.8 and 14.5 mm so that they cover the cornea completely and are stabilised by the eyelids. Rigid gas permeable lenses are much smaller (about 9 to 10.5 mm) and float on the tear film of the cornea.
On the blister and on the box you will find the diameter as DIA, next to the base curve as BC and the power as PWR or D. The same details are on the lens prescription you received at your fitting.
Both values describe the fit: the base curve sets the curvature of the back surface, the diameter the size of the lens. A flatter base curve sits looser at the same diameter, a larger diameter sits tighter at the same base curve. That is why the values are always chosen as a pair during fitting, and why the value pages show the base curve of every lens.
The same diameter does not automatically make a lens suitable. Material, edge design and base curve all play a part. If you want to try a different product, have the fit of the new lens checked – contact lenses are medical devices.
